A full hardware check for Chromebooks — keyboard, camera, speakers, microphone, trackpad, touchscreen, screen, charging, network, and ports. In the browser, in about two minutes. Built for school IT. Free, no install, and nothing is uploaded.

You'll be asked for camera and microphone access. Both are used only to test the hardware and are analysed on this device. Plug in the charger first if you want the charging port checked.

What gets tested

Keyboard test

A full key map lights up as you press each key, so a dead or sticky key is obvious. ChromeOS holds twelve keys for itself — the action row, Search, and lock/power — and those can't reach any browser tab, so they're shown separately rather than silently skipped.

Camera / webcam test

Samples thirty frames from the camera and checks the image isn't uniformly black (a dead sensor or closed shutter) and isn't a frozen still frame.

Speaker and microphone test

Plays a tone through the left speaker, then the right, and listens for each on the built-in microphone. One pass covers both speakers and the mic together.

Trackpad test

Sweep the pointer to confirm the pad tracks across its whole surface, then check click, double-tap, two-finger tap, two-finger scroll, and pinch-to-zoom.

Touchscreen and stylus test

For convertibles and tablets. Drag across the full screen and every region that responds fills in, so a dead strip or a cracked digitizer zone shows up as a gap. Also reports how many simultaneous touch points register and whether a stylus is detected, with its pressure range.

Screen and dead pixel test

Fills the entire display with solid colours — red, green, blue, white, black, grey — so dead pixels, discolouration, and backlight bleed show up anywhere on the panel, corners included.

Charging and battery test

Reports whether the device is charging and its battery level. If the charger isn't plugged in, it asks you to plug it in rather than reporting a failure.

Headphone jack test

Detects the plug, plays a tone so you can confirm sound actually reaches the headphones, and tests the headset microphone with a live input meter.

USB and HDMI ports

Tested one port at a time, so a fault is recorded against the port it's actually in. Plug a USB headset, webcam or audio dongle into a port to confirm its data lines, or a display into HDMI — which also checks a second screen genuinely becomes active.

Lid switch

Close the lid and reopen it. If the Chromebook suspends and wakes, the lid switch is working.

Beta — feedback wanted

Verity Bench is new and being tested in real school IT rooms. If a test gets something wrong, misses a fault, or calls a working device broken, that's exactly what's worth hearing about.

Two limits are worth knowing up front, because they're properties of the browser rather than bugs:

  • Twelve keys can't be tested in a browser tab. The ChromeOS action row, Search, and lock/power are held by the OS and never reach a web page. They're shown separately rather than quietly skipped.
  • Results aren't tied to a device. No browser API exposes a Chromebook's serial or asset tag, so results need labelling by hand.

Common questions

Does this upload anything?

No. Every test runs on the device. Camera and microphone data is analysed locally and never leaves the machine. Results are saved only if you copy or print them.

Why can't it test every key?

ChromeOS reserves twelve keys for the system. No website can receive them — pressing reload genuinely reloads the page instead. It's a platform limit, not a gap in this tool. The kiosk build reaches them, because a kiosk session hands the whole keyboard to the app.

When does my Chromebook stop getting updates?

Google guarantees automatic updates until a set month — the Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date — up to 10 years from the platform's release. After it passes the device still works but stops receiving security fixes, which is usually when districts retire it rather than repair it. Google publishes the date for every model in its Auto Update policy table. This tool reports the ChromeOS version a device is running, but can't identify the model — no browser API exposes it.

Can I use it on a Windows or Mac laptop?

It's built for Chromebooks, but most of it happens to work anywhere. Camera, microphone, speaker, trackpad, screen, and headphone tests are browser-standard. The keyboard map is drawn for a Chromebook layout, and the charging test needs a battery API Safari doesn't provide.
